11/20/2023 0 Comments Navy ship camouflage![]() Instead of attempting to hide vessels from enemy view, he intended that they should be highly visible with the key aim of sowing confusion in the mind of the attacker.ĭuring early submarine operations, the task of computing a fire control solution for a U-Boat commander was a manual process. Wilkinson’s idea for dazzle camouflage ran contrary to previous thinking. The ancient fleets of the Greeks and Romans had experimented with painting their vessels in shades of blue and green to blend with the surface and horizon, and in the early 20 th century, navies of the United States and Europe stipulated shades of grey or off-white in accordance with shipping regulations in an attempt to do the same. Naval camouflage was not a revolutionary idea. After submarine service in the Mediterranean, he was transferred to mine-sweeping duties in home waters and it was at this point that his idea for a radical form of effective camouflage began to take shape. ![]() Norman Wilkinson was a successful painter of maritime seascapes, and an artist for the Illustrated London News, who had set his career aside in 1915 to join the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. It was not until 1917 that a Royal Navy officer wrote to the admiralty in London with what he considered might be a possible solution. During the first six months of the war only 19 merchant vessels had been lost to U-Boat activity, however in January 1915 alone, the same amount of tonnage was sunk as was destroyed in the previous six months of conflict.Īllied navies resorted to arming trawlers and merchantmen, and some basic tactical instruction was disseminated detailing ideas to counter the U-boat threat, including heading into the line of attack, and attempting to ram hostile submarines. The following year, Germany’s campaign of unrestricted submarine warfare saw a dramatic escalation of attacks, and corresponding losses to the Allied merchant fleets. This disastrous beginning to the war forced the Royal Navy to seek safer anchorages off Donegal on Ireland’s North Atlantic coast. The initial German U-Boat campaign of 1914 against Britain’s Grand Fleet proved highly successful, resulting in the sinking of nine British warships by the end of the year, including the cruisers Aboukir and Cressy, and the battleship Formidable. There were no instruction manuals on submarine tracking, nor had sub-surface weapons been developed to counter the threat posed by submarines. During WWI, maritime artist and naval officer Norman Wilkinson proposed that the answer to the growing U-Boat threat, rather than concealment, was for a ship to expose itself to the enemy.Īt the commencement of WWI, anti-submarine warfare theory was still in its infancy. The trouble with experience is that though it can be an effective teacher, it turns out to also be a very expensive one. Within a special, unmarked box, lies all the holsters I thought were going to be good ideas, until experience showed me differently. Retention (glocks): old sidecar = new 2.I have a graveyard of holsters in my garage. Getting a good grip: AXIS > old sidecar > new 2.0 sidecar I could maybe see a tourniquet attachment being useful, but again not really practical IMO.Ĭomfort: AXIS > old sidecar > new 2.0 sidecarĬoncealability: AXIS > old sidecar = new 2.0 sidecar (splitting hairs really) For me and my thoughts- I would never need to conceal an AR mag as I don't conceal an AR. I am not considering "what if" scenarios for professions I do not belong to (law enforcement, under cover work, military, etc.) as I have no experience to share. I find the new 2.0 trex arms sidecar to be borderline "gimmicky" with the ability to conceal different items (tourniquet, AR mag, cuffs, etc.) over a pistol magazine IMO. The fit and finish of the new 2.0 sidecar holster is fantastic as is the old version. I like the old trex arms sidecar more than the new 2.0. My AXIS Elite for my VP9 is absolutely perfect like the trex sidecar is for my Glocks. Both Trex sidecars knock the socks off the Tier1 AXIS Elite in retention (for my Glocks). More importantly (to me), the Tier1 has the easiest ability to get a good purchase on the pistol grip when drawing. ![]() The Tier1 is more comfortable and conceals better (splitting hairs on concealability) than either trex sidecars. In summary, I prefer the Tier1 AXIS elite to either Trex arms sidecars (even though the retention on my Tier1 is not great and wiggles). Belt clips must be completely unscrewed and screws removed to adjust height of clips in both new 2.0 and old versions (not a big deal, just an observation). I personally do not care for the belt claw trex uses. This is the only thing I like better about the trex sidecars over the Tier1 (Glock) holsters. They have a great balance between "click" and "friction fit" and feel great when holstering and un-holstering. The retention on both the new 2.0 and old trex arms holsters are in my opinion perfect. Both versions are great in fit and finish. I also find the comfort of the old version to be slightly better. That said, and I am not sure why, the old sidecar is equal in its ability to conceal, but my ability to get a good purchase on the grip of my Glock is better on the old sidecar. There are many ways to adjust these holsters and I had to play with them to find a good fit, but I did find one. The things I like about the trex sidecar (new 2.0 and old) is the ability to change retention and how it conceals. Belt clips have a "channel" between holes so you can adjust height my just loosening the screw (very cool). Belt claw IMO is the best I have tried to date. VP9 holster is perfect- I just prefer to CCW my Glock. The AXIS Elite for my VP9 does not do this- it has part "click" part "friction fit" feel to it. Not sure why this happens and I am being OCD, but it bothers me a lot. My only gripe on this holster- my Glocks wiggle about 1/4" once they "click into place". For me, it has unsurpassed comfort, concealability, and ability to get a good grip. If I were skinnier, all comments made below might be redacted. I find it is really comfortable to conceal and get a good grip on my firearm when the top of the grip rest right under that "shelf". I am husky and have a small "shelf" (see picture below). I loosen the belt now whenever I sit down and tighten it when I stand up- I believe the AGIS would have been perfect had I used this belt before selling it. I also bought a WPS NEXbelt ratcheting belt about that same time. I sold the AGIS elite and bought an AXIS elite that has the shock cord holding it together. I believe this was due to my belly pushing too much pressure into the firearm and holster. I had trouble with the AGIS buttons popping apart while I was wearing it. The AGIS Elite got benched for the AXIS Elite. the Tier 1 AXIS and AEGIS elite holsters (Glock 19/45 and VP9)įor starters, my first sidecar was the old trex arms holster which got benched for the Tier1 AGIS Elite. the old trex arms sidecar (Glock 19/45 only)ģ.
